John Wayne Airport (JWA) began as a private landing strip in the 1920s, then became the Orange County Airport in 1941. In 1939, the County of Orange acquired the airport, which was used as an Army Airbase during World War II. In 1952, Bonanza Airlines began offering regular passenger service to and from the airport, and the airport grew to over 500 acres.
The airport was renamed John Wayne Airport in 1979 in honor of actor John Wayne, who lived in neighboring Newport Beach and died that year. A statue of John Wayne was installed at the airline terminal in 1982
