April 26th 2025: The Segerstrom family has been a cornerstone of Costa Mesa, California, for over a century, significantly influencing the region’s agricultural, commercial, and cultural development.
Agricultural Roots
The family’s legacy began with Carl John “C.J.” Segerstrom, a Swedish immigrant who, in the early 1900s, acquired land in what is now Costa Mesa. By the mid-20th century, the Segerstroms had amassed approximately 2,000 acres, becoming the largest independent producers of lima beans in the United States.
Transition to Development
After World War II, Henry T. Segerstrom, C.J.’s grandson, transitioned the family business from agriculture to real estate development. In 1967, the family opened South Coast Plaza, which has since evolved into one of the most successful and prestigious shopping centers in the United States, renowned for its collection of luxury retailers.
Cultural Contributions
Beyond commerce, the Segerstroms have been instrumental in enriching Orange County’s cultural landscape. Henry T. Segerstrom was the founding chairman of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, now known as the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The family donated land and resources to establish this premier cultural venue.
Continuing Legacy
Today, the family’s business, C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, remains active in managing South Coast Plaza and other real estate ventures.
